I'm diagramming the Lurie Garden in Grant Park. Did you know that the "seam" (board walk) between the upper and lower gardens is supposed to follow the city's former shore line and the railroad tracks that were once free-standing on some embankment in the lake?

Those railroad tracks were a pretty remarkable feat of engineering in their day, from what I understand. It's tough to find cartographically accurate maps of Chicago from before the fire and all of the subsequent fill that extended the shoreline out but the "original" shoreline was right where you indicate as I recall. I didn't know that "Government Pier" preceded Navy Pier- the latter was a Burnham idea, initially part of a larger set of piers that was never completed.
