Building upon: small gene pools
and
"I think he was his own 7th cousin."

Someone do an analysis of this circle of life. I think he only had two great- great- great- great- great- grandparents (total)? Is his mother his... cousin?

This is part of why the family tree and taxonomic charts generally are so nice- geometric irregularities are easily spotted and alert the viewer to the truly sketchy moments. There are two immediately obvious "questionable narratives."
The first can be seen in the gene pool that resembles a Lego with tentacles on the right hand side: Charles II had a child with his niece; the child, Ferdinand II, had a child with his first cousin; that child, Ferdinand III, would go on to have a child with HIS first cousin; that child, Manana, had a child with her uncle; that child was Charles II.
The asymmetrical square on the left side took place over a shorter time frame but is even more puzzling. It seems Maria had a child with her first cousin, Maximilian II; the child then married her uncle/second cousin, Philip II, which union resulted in Philip III, who then dumped some babies into the other circle.
The timing of this genetic pinch point says so much- the eviction of the Moors and the defeat of the Spanish Armada more or less bookend a century of frantic inbreeding. If only the two events' chronologies were reversed! We would speak Arabic, love pleasure, and never want for art and literature.
The man I've now become interested in, and will proceed to research, is Charles II (of Austria), the absolute balancing point of this precarious Jenga tower of incest. Who was the man? What drove him? What ultimately caused his downfall? Luis, Jen, I'm being serious here- let's write a screenplay about Charles II (of Austria)!
Sincerely,
uninvited guest blogger
Wikipedia tells me that not only did he father fifteen children with his niece but was also seminal to a new breed of horses.
Jen- his mother is his first cousin, his second cousin twice removed, his third cousin [once removed?] and probably his relative in dozens of other discrete ways.
Luis- let's both hole ourselves up this weekend and try and flesh out our biopic. Keep your eyes open for tabloids, fried chicken places, and beautiful/gloomy British scenery too though because I greatly enjoy those entries.
